Mon fils et moi sommes rentrés un peu par hasard dans la chapelle où se tenait l'exposition de Mouss, et tout de suite, nous avons été attirés par cette explosion de couleurs, de formes, de vie, de mouvement..... Nous avons jeté notre dévolu sur certaines peintures qui interpellaient particulièrement notre imaginaire. Et puis nous avons rencontré Mouss lui-même, homme et artiste chaleureux, plein de vie comme ce qu'il crée, très intéressant, et drôle aussi. Une belle rencontre, une belle découverte. Nous vous souhaitons "all the very best", Mouss, merci !

Out of a deep artistic past rooted in the rich textile dyeing traditions of his native Burkina Faso and a rather more recent exposure to the heady excitements of European Modernism, Mouss has recently begun to develop an intensely personal and highly original painting style. Key to this has been, on the one hand, the memories of his Burkina Faso heritage – abstract forms derived from the experience of the tangled and twisted tree roots he remembers from swimming at his favourite waterfalls there, the geometrical patterns of the Bobo masks and the vivid ensembles of textiles and jewellery worn by the women among them and, on the other, the willingness also to experiment with these traditions that his encounters with contemporary Western art has begun to give him. Add to this also the rich sound world of music (and dance) that is such a significant part of his Fulani culture (think Baaba Maal and Youssou N'dour) and the astonishing rhythmic fusions, dense patternings and abstract dynamism of works like Xylophoniste and Flutes begin to make very serious sense. What visual excitements to look forward to!
